The Kelliher Economics Foundation was established in 1964 and conducted annual essay writing competitions for secondary school pupils studying economics. Hundreds of essays were received and reviewed by an independent, expert judge, who then awarded cash prizes to winning entries. In 2000, the Foundation updated and reinstated its annual Awards. Each year, up to three young New Zealanders, who demonstrate a proven ability in Economics, receive an award to study at an approved university or tertiary institution of their choice. Of note, is a continuing emphasis on deserving secondary school students with financial constraints that would otherwise limit their access to further education. There are currently fifteen successful applicants from various regions studying at New Zealand tertiary institutions with the support of the Kelliher Economics Foundation. Entries are invited for the Awards in May each year and close during September. Secondary school students are required to complete a questionnaire and enlist the support of a teacher or mentor to 'sponsor' their application. Kelliher Economics Foundation 2007 Scholarship
